"I took this course several years ago and LOVED it. It completely changed my relationship with birds to be able to recognize them by song, and I learned so much about individual species and where to expect to find them. Roberta and Jim are incredibly knowledgeable and make the experience fun and engaging. I look forward to taking it again as a refresher one day. [The class is] well worth the cost….it's a terrific bargain, and Rivers and Birds does great work in the community.

By far, the most diverse and abundant vertebrate wildlife group is birds. Over 500 species of birds occur in New Mexico. Over 250 of these are migratory birds that winter as far south as South America.

Like all other life, birds are critical supporting threads in the web of life. They benefit Earth’s community as pollinators, seed dispersers, insectivores, carnivores, scavengers, prey, and creatures of visual and aural beauty.

Each spring, the tapestry of bird permeates our landscapes.

Each bird has its niche: the Golden Eagle needs wide open habitat with healthy rodent populations, the Virginia’s Warbler needs shrubby oak or locust habitat, while the Belted Kingfisher requires a river with fish. The composite of a bird community can serve as an indicator of habitat conditions.

Rivers & Birds has a talented ornithological staff that loves to share its knowledge of bird song identification and ecology with adults, children, and land management agencies.

With Rivers & Birds veteran ornithologist Jim Travis, we have developed and taught effective Birding by Ear courses for professional biologists and aspiring birders for the past ten years. Join wildlife biologists and educator Roberta Salazar for this unique workshop on May 19th and 20th!
