Students Explore the Sangres

Our upper Rio Grande Watershed has a remarkable conservation legacy including five wilderness areas and one of our nation’s first wild and scenic rivers. It is crucial to develop local stewards who know first-hand and appreciate these treasures so they can care for them in the future.

Rivers & Birds Students Explore the Sangres Program, successfully presented in 2017, takes public school, third-grade students, out on hiking adventures to explore and learn the values of wilderness and Leave No Trace Ethics through two days of hikes: 1) a gentle 4-mile round trip hike in our newest wilderness, the Columbine Hondo and2) a 1.5 mile hike at Orilla Verde Recreation Area along the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River, or an optional trip to Great Sand Dunes National Monument to explore that wilderness setting.
