Wilderness Project

In 2009 Rivers & Birds embarked on a wilderness conservation focus, when we began a human use survey of wilderness areas in our backyard in collaboration with Carson National Forest. We were surprised to learn that even though New Mexico is relatively low in human population and large in landmass, it has the lowest percentage of wilderness of any western state. It is important to ensure that these wilderness jewels are managed well and that potential wilderness areas are identified and promoted. Rivers & Birds is working in collaboration with The Wilderness Society, NM Wilderness Alliance and the New Mexico Wildlife Federation and others on a project to protect New Mexico wilderness.

Do you love hiking for an adventure? Come and volunteer with us! It is a great excuse to learn new trails in the gorgeous wilderness areas near Taos. This work contributes to the management of these wilderness areas. Rivers & Birds wilderness areas of focus are within the Carson National Forest including the Latir Wilderness, Wheeler Peak Wilderness, the northwest portion of the Pecos Wilderness and the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness Study Area. There are many opportunities for hands-on service projects.
