Riparian Restoration
Rivers & Birds’ students have planted a forest of about 700 native trees along the Rio Grande in the Orilla Verde Recreation Area. These cottonwood and box elder trees provide shade and shelter for countless birds, wildlife, humans, and an occasional feast for beavers—although we are always working to improve fencing around threatened trees!
We recently partnered with Ecotone Landscape Planning, LLC to involve students in seeding native grasses and wildflowers as part of the organization’s wetland restoration work in the Lower Embudo Watershed.
Rivers & Birds works to continue to create opportunities to involve youth in ecosystem restoration projects. If you have a project that would benefit from student involvement, contact Gwendolyn Pieper!
